Tasmania 2011

Tasmania 2011

from April 8th-April 23rd 24 students and teachers traveled around Tasmania and thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip! The photos above are a sample of my final images. Throughout the trip i was photographing with 3 different cameras, a Canon Digital SLR, a Sony SLR and Holga film camera (unfortunately the holga didn't get used as much as i wished it would have). I took two different DSLR's so that i could use an 8mm fisheye lens that would only go on my Sony camera.

I found the trip so enjoyable. Just being able to be with good friends and have the freedom to just photograph and not really have to stress or worry about anything. I think there was plenty of variety in the trip as i never felt bored on the trip and always wanted to get out and keep photographing.

Alexia Sinclair

Today we had a special guest speaker come and talk in our class. Alexia Sinclair is a photographer and digital artist who has completed Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons I) and Master of Fine Arts.

"Her distinct style is easily recognisable and highly original. Using a visual narrative to seduce her audience with each photographic feast, Sinclair’s art is dark and seductive, baroque and symbolic. Her multilayered photographs subtly present contemporary notions of fashion and beauty through innovative digital media, whilst restoring antique notions of classicism, elegance and luxury." Just from listen to Alexia and watching the videos about how she worked i feel this quite sums up her and her work.

Elizabeth Báthory – The Countess of Blood (1560-1614) Alexia Sinclair

Alexander the Great – Son of Zeus (356–323 bc) Alexia Sinclair

Peter Romanov The Great (1672–1725) Alexia Sinclair

Alexia talked about some of her main inspirations in photography and art. Some of the photographers/digital artists that she spoke of were; Erwin Olaf, Tim Walker, Jill Greenberg and Dave Hill.

After looking at these artists I can see why Alexia finds these artists so inspiring. While talking Alexia mentioned a series that she found quite interesting was the 'Royal Blood' series by Erwin Olaf.

I find these images so interesting but so confronting. I think it is quite a different way to look at historical figures. Each image depicts a historical figure and shows the way they died.

Dave Hill was another artist that Alexia talked about and after looking at his work i find him quite inspirational. His images can be found at: http://www.davehillphoto.com/gallery/page-1

While listening to Alexia's talk it was quite scary to see the amount of work and post-production that she does. Just one video that she showed was scary enough, it showed the amount of work she did for 20 hours worth of post-production and she mentioned that it was one of the smaller post-production jobs that she did. Even though i did find the talk scary and confronting with the amount of work i did interest me and want me to look at photo-manipulation and digital art.

Lightroom Presets

I have been exploring lightroom and its different functions. One of the functions that have been mentioned in class was the use of 'Presets'. This made me want to explore what is possible to achieve with the use of these 'Presets'. These are two images that have been edited using a preset.

Graphics

This is my graphics poster for my graphics class.

Wedding Elective

Today we had a really good workshop with a Canberra wedding photography business, Fusion Photography. Ben (the photographer) talked to us about how to pose the bride and groom, look for the right lighting and all the different sort of shots that we should have by the end of the day. It was really interesting to listen and ask him questions.

Those are my best shots from the day. It was a really great experience and has made me feel a lot more comfortable about photographing my wedding.
